Patrick Steel

They call him Tricks.

To me, he was the first man I ever felt I could trust.

He annihilated all the stereotypes about men rooted in me, even when he so easily fit the mold.

He wasn’t my type, not at all.

I hated men …

In my last life, anyway.

Savvy Sutton

I call her Savanah.

It isn’t her name, but it made total sense.

She didn’t know who she was, yet she held on to the lies she so desperately wanted to believe in, to save a part of herself.

She tried to fight her attraction for me, and I made damn sure that didn’t happen.

Then…

she tricked me.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories grow from lies.

4 hearts

This is the 5th book in this next Gen series of Steel babies.  Each one has been unique.  I do love this author's writing style and most of the characters she brings us.  I will continue to read everything she writes. That said, the first 2 books of this series really fell in the NA genre and the characters presented more as adults with adult issues.  The next 3 books all take place in high school.  They by definition are YA books.  Fine for a lot of folks.  Way far removed from where I am.

So the craft of writing comes down to this.  We have teenagers trying to handle some pretty adult issues.  And what we get, for the most part, is the teenage response to those issues. A 25 year old or a 35 year old would handle things differently than these two 17 year olds do. If I frame the book within those parameters, I think it is a much more enjoyable read.

Patrick has been the good cousin throughout the series. He supports everyone--always.  This story overlaps some of the previous books timelines. I love his parents and their outlook on life.  He is a great guy who is a bit indulged upon by his parents. He gets away with quite a bit. But then he meets Savvy. She is not like anyone else he knows. And although she has tough defenses in place when it comes to friends and dates, she has good reason to not want to let her guard down. Savvy makes the book for me.  I loved watching her character develop and watching the light bulbs come on as she sees the world through a different lens.  All of that motivated by Patrick's friendship.

There are a couple twists to the story. I don't know that the result is where I saw the story going. The best part of the whole series to me is the love and banter between the Crew.  If not for any other reason, read the series for the witty conversations and humor shared with these cousins.

The youngest of the Crew are still to come. In my world, I hope we jump ahead in time just a bit--seniors in high school ready to go out in the world maybe??  Looking forward to Tris for sure.

Nice addition to the series.
