When who I was and who I've tried to become collide during my clinical trial, the fate of one patient changes everything.

In a single moment, everything I've worked for is jeopardized. My integrity, my career, and even my relationship with Westin.

3.5 Hearts

This book is a stand alone by this author. By her own reporting, the author wasn't even sure she wanted to publish it.  The subject matter just tears at your heart strings.  Everyone with cancer wants to have hope. The lead character, Serenity, is trying to give that to her patients.

Where the story fell apart for me was with that lead character. I typically read books straight through. And this is a one click author for me. So I knew something was off when I had to set the book down and walk away. The premise of the story is good. The message of hope and healing is well defined. But Serenity was all over the place emotionally and professionally. I just could not grab on to her as a champion in this story.

Westin, on the other hand was wonderful. Very swoony and way to good for Ren in the long run. He put up with a lot from her. God love him.

Not my favorite of this author but it won't stop me from reading more.

TOUCHSTONE BY KAREN STIVALI
Release Date: June 29, 2021

Cover Design: Elle Maxwell Designs

Sam doesn't think love is in the cards. The cards disagree.

When Phoebe Stevens' life implodes in a spectacularly public fashion, she's desperate to escape Manhattan. So the offer of a job setting up a new Vermont gastropub couldn’t come at a better time. Driving a U-Haul on winding mountain roads is Phoebe's personal version of hell. But when the caretaker of her guesthouse answers the door tousled, shirtless, and baking cinnamon rolls, her first impression of Vermont dramatically improves.

Sam Trembley believes everyone gets one true love, but he’s already blown his chance. He's spent five years avoiding relationships. Now he’s back in Colebury where sunrise tarot draws and moonlit hikes soothe his soul. But why do the tarot cards keep showing him this nonsense about soulmates? Could it have anything to do with the jaded city girl on his doorstep?

Playing tour guide is fun, but taste-testing her culinary creations as she shimmies her luscious hips around his kitchen is downright irresistible. Soon their chemistry burns hotter than the pub's wood-fired oven.

Has fate brought them together for a summer of love...or a lifetime of happiness?

Touchstone contains craving-inducing menu planning, a sassy white witch grandma, seismic sexy times, and tarot cards on a mission to prove soulmates are real.

Touchstone by Karen Stivali - Excerpt

I’d changed into a black tunic swing dress and capri leggings, and a gust of air flared the skirt Marilyn Monroe-style the second I stepped outside.

“Hey.” Sam’s grin was like a beacon luring me toward him. “Did you get a chance to rest from your drive?”

“Nah, but I did get in a shower. Those rainforest showerheads were amazing.”

“Glad you enjoyed them.”

Was it bad that I was hoping I’d just made him picture me naked? What was wrong with me? I was never this flirty, and not just because I’d been in a relationship the past half-decade. I just…wasn’t. “So whatcha cookin’?”

“We’ve got some jerk pork, some cilantro-lime chicken breasts, and some asparagus. There’s potato salad inside and some fiddleheads.”

“Ooh, fiddleheads. I’ve actually never had them. I thought they were only around in early spring.”

Sam shook his head, deftly turning over pork chops with his tongs. “Not up here. All depends on the winter and when the snow melts. This is a little later than usual for them to be around, but we had snow until May this year so…”

“May? Is that typical?”

He laughed. “The only thing typical about New England weather is that you can never tell what to expect.”

“I can’t imagine having snow until mid-spring. I’m used to Manhattan where a few inches slows everything to a crawl. But I do love when it snows at night. Empty New York City snow-covered streets are a thing of beauty.”

“That does sound nice. Did you grow up in the city?” Sam flipped the asparagus and lowered the lid on the grill.

“Yep. Lived there pretty much my whole life. I spent most summers at the beach, with a good friend. And I did an internship one summer during culinary school, in Boston. That’s where I met Audrey.”

“Right. Audrey. Is that how you wound up with the Speakeasy gig?”

“Yup. I needed a job and her family needed someone willing to get the gastropub up and running.”

“Sounds like divine timing.”

I shrugged and stared at my feet. Flashes of the scene that had led to me needing a job bombarded my brain. “Something like that.”

“You want a beer? Or I have soda, juice, wine…”

“Beer sounds great. Thanks.”

Sam jogged back to the house, hair bouncing. I tried to decide if he looked better coming or going. Which made me wonder what he looked like coming.

Phoebe, stop it. You’re here to do a job and make a plan for your fucked-up life, not to fuck it up more with…complications.

I forced myself to take a deep breath and focus on my surroundings. I hadn’t really looked around when we were moving all my shit into the cottage. The space between the main house and the guesthouse was no ordinary, run-of-the-mill back yard. It was surrounded on all sides by hundred-foot trees—a mix of evergreens and probably oaks, based on the acorn remnants I’d seen on the driveway. There were elaborate flower beds all around the house and a rock garden with enormous sparkling rocks—pink, gray, some sort of marble, maybe? I assumed that was a perk of owning a rock shop. And frog statues. Were they…doing yoga?

Sam appeared and handed me a chilled, bright-yellow can. The cheerful label said Sip of Sunshine IPA. “Your official welcome to Vermont.” He clinked my can with his, and we both drank.

It tasted bright and hoppy and instantly refreshed me. “I take it your aunt likes frogs?”

Sam opened the grill and plated the asparagus. “Actually, I’m to blame for the yoga frogs.” He gave the asparagus a quick squeeze of lemon and then set the plate on the wooden picnic table alongside the grill.

“Oh really?” I sipped some more, hoping to quell the fire or whatever it was that tingled through me every time Sam spoke.

“Legend has it that when I was three or four my grandmother took me to the Christmas bazaar at the all-season market, and I saw one of those frogs…” He scanned the yard. “That one, there, in the lotus pose. And decided I had to get Aunt Iris that frog for Christmas.”

“That’s adorable.”

“I was a cute kid. There’s photographic proof in some of the old photos in the house. But apparently Iris made such a huge fuss about how much she loved the frog, I got it in my head she needed another one every year. And now it’s just tradition. Every Christmas I get her some sort of frog. She took most of them with her when she moved into my grandmother’s house. There are salt and pepper shakers, creamers and sugar bowls, a teapot, bookends, a nightlight…”

“Wow. That’s dedication.”

He chuckled. “I’ve been traveling the last few years, and no matter where I was, I bought frogs wherever I saw them. I’m stocked up for a few Christmases now.”

I ran my hand over my beer can, tracing the logo. “It’s great how close you are to them. I’ve never had anything like that. Not with family at least. I’m closer to my best friend’s family than my own, but I don’t even see them much anymore.”

“I get it. Growing up, my best friend spent most of his time at my house. His parents were getting a divorce and my grandmother all but adopted him for a few years while that played out.”

“Does he still live in town?”

“Nope. He moved to Maine a few years ago. You’d probably like him—he runs a small bakery and makes crazy-good desserts.”

“Nice. Too bad he’s not closer. I’d hire him.”

Sam stuck an instant-read thermometer into one of the pork chops. “I’ll let him know in case the bakery doesn’t work out.”

“Can I help you with anything?”

He threw me that heart-stopping smile, and my insides flip-flopped. “Nope. You’re gonna be cooking for half the town soon. Tonight, let me do the cooking. Just don’t get too used to it, because I have a very small repertoire.”

“I can teach you a trick or two.”
He muffled another giggle and let his hair swing forward, but not before I caught the hint of a blush on his cheeks. For someone who rarely flirted I sure was managing to make everything I said sound sexual.

Love being back in the True North world!  This was a new to me author.  Sam and Phoebe's story was sweet and romantic. And we get to see some familiar faces from the Sarina Bowen series as well.

Phoebe leaves New York embarrassed and needing a new outlet on life. She and Sam cross paths and landneighbors and the rest is history. They are destined to be soulmates.  These two hit it off from the start.  Lots of chemistry. The side characters round out the story nicely. Everyone has that small town nosiness but well intentioned actions.  Add in the crystals and wiccan rituals and you have a very interesting read.

So glad I selected this one for review.

I barely took two steps up onto the porch of my house when the front door opened and Mom walked out. Her gaze went straight to the way Ryan was holding my hand, making her beautiful blue eyes brighten even more before they traveled to my left hand.
“Damn it!” she grumbled under her breath, her shoulders drooping comically in disappointment.
“What?” I asked with a laugh.
She sighed. “We had a little bet going. Raven and I both thought you would come home with a ring on your finger.”
I lifted my hand and turned it left and right to emphasize the lack of a ring. “Sorry, Mom, but—”
“No ring!” Dad whooped as he came out onto the porch. “I’ll be taking that payment tonight, thank you very much.”
“Gross,” I muttered to Ryan under my breath. I could only imagine what the prize for winning the bet was, and I didn’t want those images in my head. Especially when pink filled my mom’s cheeks, and she slapped at Dad’s chest, telling him to shush.
Ryan laughed quietly as he pulled me against him, tucking me under his arm and letting his hand slide down to my hip. It was a bold move to make in front of my father, but Dad had always been laid-back when it came to anything to do with my best friend and me. When I glanced his way to garner his reaction to Ryan holding me so possessively, it was to see something close to approval in his green eyes—and maybe a little relief too.
“Mom.” I pulled her attention back to me. “I don’t have a ring—”
“Yet,” Ryan stressed.
“Yet,” I agreed to soothe him, stroking my fingers up his back underneath his coat and T-shirt. “But Ryan and I are getting married in November.”
“Really?” Mom squealed, bouncing from one foot to the other.
“Don’t go getting excited, woman. The bet was a ring on her finger,” Dad reminded her. “No ring means I win.”
“Shut up, Jet,” she scolded. “I don’t care if you won or not. Our baby just said she’s getting married. That’s something to celebrate.”

BLURB

Fire is the reason why my life changed.
And I’m the reason why fire doesn’t stand a chance.

I’m a smokejumper.
I save those who can’t be saved.
But somewhere along the way, smoke has blinded me.
I’ve forgotten there is more to life than saving lives, but I can’t press pause.
A category five hurricane heading straight toward us changes everything I ever thought I knew about myself.
For instance, Ryan Hathaway.
Paramedic from Vegas. Sexier than sin. Sassy.
A man.

I’ve never wanted a man.
But I want him.
And he makes me feel the hottest I’ve ever felt.
Fire can’t even compare to him.
Only thing is, he doesn’t do straight guys. It’s his rule.
What I love about rules is that they are made to be broken.
And I’m going to make him rewrite everything he thought he knew.

Nothing is ever black and white, though.
It’s the details that live in the shades of grey that we need to watch out for.
The hurricane dislodges one of my MC brother's hate and hits us harder than the storm does.
Wind. Rain. Blood. Death.
The storm is far from over and our lives are at stake.
I live my life to the fullest and I won’t die with regrets.
Ryan is the blaze I never want to fight.
If we go down, we will burn together.
Extinguishing us is not an option.

Because after a storm, there’s always a rainbow.
I’ll be damned if I don’t finally see what’s at the end.

How the hell do I get myself in these situations? Out of all the jobs as a paramedic, I find myself constantly in front of biker gangs more than regular patients. I mean, I leave Vegas and come to Baton Rouge to do a favor for my boss and end up in Ruthless Kings territory, again? Do they multiply when I blink or something?
Should have told my boss that I wouldn’t swing by his old stomping ground to help cover a staffing shortage his friend was experiencing. It seemed convenient. Stay in Baton Rouge until the storm passes, then head down to the coast where they’ll need me most.
Now I’m here, and I can’t tell if the biker looking at me wants to eat me, fuck me, or kill me.
“For a little guy, you sure know your way around bone,” Butcher grunts.
“For a guy named Butcher, you sure do complain a lot.” I press the fresh bandage against his thigh, maybe a little harder than necessary, and he growls at me.
I always liked riling up a guy bigger than me. I don’t know why. I know I don’t have a death wish, but it’s fun, and usually, bigger guys won’t pick on me. I’m sure my luck will run out soon, but until then, I’m going to poke every single bear.
And giggle as I run away.
“Okay. I’ll just say it was an accident and that no one got shot, or we’d have to report it to the police, and I don’t feel like staying here longer than necessary. Not that your hospitality isn’t… wonderful,” I add, only to sound more like a jerk.
The big guy, the one that wears the patch that says Prez, laughs as he strokes his chin with his fingers. “You’re welcome back anytime, Ryan. We appreciate your willingness to… cooperate.” He reaches into his cut pocket—I learned they weren’t vests after being corrected a few years ago—and pulls out a stack of money.
Here’s the thing about bricks of cash like this: it’s most likely illegal money. Maybe it’s drug money or blood money, but honestly? I don’t really care. I have student loan debt to pay.
I pluck the cash out of his hand and tuck it into my paramedic bag. “It’s been a pleasure doing business with you.” I give them a mock salute and swallow down my nerves as I wade through the very large bodies covered in leather.
Now that I’m looking at them, I can’t help but wonder if they’re going to let me leave. Maybe I’ll get lucky. Perhaps they’ll want to take turns with my body and ravish me. I might be a smart man, but I’m still a man, and somehow these bikers get better looking with each state I end up in.
Ah, a man can dream, can’t he?
Lye, according to his patch on his vest—I mean, cut—opens the door for me.
Once I’m outside, I take a deep breath and don’t bother looking back. Of course, the quicker I get out of here, the better.
“Hey!”
A deep voice with a twangy edge has me freezing mid-step next to the rig, and I try not to panic. Did one of the guys see me check them out? I didn’t. I think I kept my eyes to myself. I thrust my shoulders back and open the doors to the rig to toss the medical bag inside. I close the left side and see the most handsome man I’ve seen in my entire life. I suck in a breath—no—he stole my ability to breathe, looking as good as he does.

I love this author's work. The Big Sky universe is one of my favorites of hers. This book stats off a Big Sky Heroes series. We meet Sam who is a firefighter in this one. I love a good single parent trope. This one has the added twist in that our two main characters are left as guardian's of two young children who lost their parents. Sam is their uncle and Natasha is mom's best friend.
As we have come to expect from this author, their are great moments of humor and some steamy romance. This book had a bit more tension than usually happens in her books. What was also different for me, from other similar tropes I hacc read, is that the H and h just fell in to a natural routine like they had prepared their whole lives to be in the parent role for these children. No animosity between them. In fact, Natasha had a crush on Sam most of her life. Other than coordinating schedules, they just kind of picked up and fell into place.
The tension comes when they stop communicating. But it seemed to me, the story may have been more interesting if there was at least more s3xual tension between them before they jump on each other. Maybe if they knew each other in high school but hadn't seen each other since??
It was a good read. Quick read with some humor and adorable kiddos. Loved seeing the couples from previous Big Sky books!  I will read the nwext one out in this series for sure.

Release Blitz & Review: Falling For The Villian

Falling for the Villain by Rachel Van Dyken & M. Robinson is now live!

From Wall Street Journal & USA Bestselling Author M. Robinson & #1 NYT Bestselling Author Rachel Van Dyken comes a full length, standalone dark romance novel.

“Play for me, Juliet…”

Those four words whispered in my ear again and again until I craved what I used to fear. Such a simple demand from my captor—the man who stole me and refused to tell me why he wouldn’t let me go.

I was his.

He made me need him, just as much as he needed me. I broke all the rules of the golden prison he put me in.

During the day he ruled his dark, seedy world. His subjects and me.
During the night—he bowed before my feet.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the villains in all the fairy tales you read?

You’ll soon find out.

It all started when he kidnapped me and made me his pet.
And it all ended with me…

Calling him master.

I had to go back and read the ending of Mafia Casanova first to get in the mind set for this book. Once I did that, I was all in.  We were left with a cliff hanger. What happened to Juliet?

This book starts right where the first book ended. I could not have predicted the twist the story took from there. We know Juliet's family is mafia. But could there be so much more to their world than what the surface sees?

This is a dark read and will not be for everyone. It was interesting to not only see the evolution of Juliet into someone she never would have imagined. But to also see Donovan's heart crack wide open. His vulnerability in the end is what made the story for me.

It would be interesting to see this couple down the road.  Too many secrets revealed to say much more about the story. you will need to find out as you go.  Please take the author's warnings seriously. This is not a book for everyone. There will be triggers.  It covers the underbelly of the crime world.
