I love this author and am always happy to pick up one of her books.  This is a stand alone story that from the first words will rip your heart out. It follows a family:  Sean and Kelly and their son Jake. Life has torn them apart and the books spends the time trying to figure out if they can ever be whole again.

The story is good.  The writing is great. I was a little concerned given the subject matter when it popped up at only 173 pages. Really nothing wrong with the story but I felt like it needed something else.  There are a couple of tension moments but I felt especially  Kelly, could have given us more depth as to what acclimation was like for her.  Just a few more chapters I think would have made this perfect.

Cairstina Reilly was locked in silence when I found her.

When I ravaged my way through weak men to save her.

When I killed for her.

Now our fates are tangled together in a web of lies, danger, and betrayal.

I have to take her hostage.

Drag her from her silent, private world,

And force her into mine.

In my Clan’s enclave deep in the wild Scottish Highlands,

no one will find us and our secret will be safe…

But I’m not the only one with secrets.

Cairstina thinks her silence will protect her.

But only I can do that.

And the sooner my bonnie lass learns to trust me,

The sooner I can set her free from everything that’s held her captive…

Everything except me.

Amazon

Of course he’ll hurt you, I chide myself. Why else did he bring you here?

I’ve been so naïve, I realize, so deeply hidden in my world of fantasies that for a brief moment in time, I thought being hauled to this beautiful lodge in the woods would be an escape from my dismal life at home. But now—

I can breathe, but barely, as he pins me in place, those rough fingers of his trapping my throat, my pulse quickening against his palm.

With his second hand, he reaches for the edge of his mask and whips it off his head. He’s glaring at me. Naturally.

My pulse races. He’s roguishly handsome, in a haunting, terribly masculine way. Longish, dark brown hair frames his face, his deep brown eyes glinting in the overhead light. He’s got a scruffy beard and full lips, and he—

The next second, my mind comes to a screeching halt when he lowers his lips to mine, my neck still caged in the roughness of his hand.

I’ve never been kissed before. I’m so startled by his response I don’t protest, but melt against him. His lips are soft, perhaps the only soft part of his entire body, and they move against mine with branding insistence. A woman never forgets a kiss like this.

Women use words like tender or romantic, but this is nothing of the sort. His mouth on mine feels like both punishment and violence, an assault against my innocence and retribution for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I inhale out of panic and instinct, his breath becoming mine.

I should be terrified. I should be plotting my escape or frozen in fear, but I’m neither. I’m not sure what I am when he pulls his mouth off mine.

We’re panting as we stare only inches away from each other, my skin prickles with the warmth of his breath.

He flexes his hand on my neck, and my pulse throbs. There’s something undeniably erotic about the way he touches me, and it takes me by surprise. How can a threat to my safety make my heart beat faster, my breath quicken, and heat rise on my cheeks?

“Tell me your name,” he says in a hoarse, ragged whisper. Is he affected like me, then?

No. No. I internally plead with him not to force the issue, not to make a big deal of this. I want to be his ally, not his enemy, but I might as well be a foolish wee girl who wishes herself away to castles and fairytales. There’s something in those deep brown eyes of his that tell me we have more in common than it may appear.

There’s a deep well of hurt in those eyes only someone who’s been wounded by the same blade can recognize.

“Your name, beautiful,” he says. If I could make a sound at all, I’d moan at the way his words affect me, as evocative as tender caress.

No one has ever called me beautiful. Why does it have to be him?

I look away from him, but only for a second because the next moment his fingers are at my chin and he’s dragging my gaze back to his.

He shakes his head slowly from side to side, his eyes on me never wavering. “Tell me,” he says, an unmistakable note of authority in his voice I’ve heard several times now. “I won’t allow you to defy me.”

I swallow hard.

I can’t tell you.

If I could, I would.

He shakes his head again. “Defying me is a mistake, lass. I won’t give you another warning. If you don’t tell me your name, you’ll be punished.”

At his words, the tempo of my heartbeat comes to a stuttering halt, and anything that resembled tenderness or hope quenches.

I’ve been punished before.

I’ll be punished again.

I should be afraid, but all I feel right now is a mild sense of curiosity as I steel myself for whatever will come. His words are already cold and distant, and he may as well be touching the body of another woman.

I’m not here anymore.

I’ve never been confined to the earth like a mortal anyway.

This is my first time reading this author. I was intrigued by the synopsis so I grabbed this one.  Who doesn't love a good Irish Mafia story?  This is the first in a new series called Mountain Men.  Leith is the head of his clan and rules this area of Scotland.

As a part of doing business, he happens upon Cairstina. She witnessed some of the mafia business and he takes her prisoner.  What happens over time is that Cairstina calls to him.  She is mute but yet they seem to communicate just fine. His intent to treat her like other prisoners only lasts a night.  Then the sparks are flying and these two are trying to figure out what they might be to each other.

There is lots of mafia business happening here as well as some world building. We find out who is who not only in the clan but also the friends and foes out in world.

I quickly read this story and am very happy to read more about this family. Leith's siblings are bound to get their HEA as well I am sure.

Great story!

“What are you gonna do about it, Izzy? Throw your wine at me?”
She does. She throws her wine in my face. Or at least she tries to. The flick of her wrist comes up short when I rear back and the wine splashes on the floor, leaving her standing there with a stupid empty glass and a puzzled expression. That should have worked, her pretty eyes say. Why is this jackass not covered in my wine backwash?
There’s no effort required to pluck the glass out of her hand. I toss it in the sink, where it promptly shatters.
“Hey,” she complains. “That was Waterford crystal, you dick.”
I chuckle and close in, aware that I’m hard and getting harder. “That’s your whole problem, Isabella.”
Her eyes flash. Her lips pout. In another second she’ll be stamping her bare foot. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“This.” I run a hand low, over the shape of my cock. She can see the rigid outline through my shorts. I know she can. She sucks in a corner of her lower lip and jerks her head to force her eyes away.
“You’re disgusting.”
I chuckle. “You wish you thought so.”

This book grabbed me from the start.  Single dad. Down trodden hero. Strong heroine who knows what she wants in life. Small town characters.  I loved all of it form the first few chapters!

I have read some of the Gentry series but not all. I guess this would be part of the next gen?? Regardless, Izzy has grown into an independant woman who is determined to set out on her own. Not that her family doesn't love her to bits, but she wants to get out from under them.

Rafe is the opposite. He wants to get away from everything his family represents. Fate has a way of messing with us. Rafe ends up getting much more than he bargained for.  Sole custody of a son who know nothing about him. A shared apartment with a sweet heart of a woman who doesn't seem to mind his rough around the edges attitude. And loves his son even more.

Truly a heart filled story. Izzy and Rafe go from enemies to friends to lovers.  Izzy is the healing balm that Rafe needs.

Great story!

Excerpt

I had spent too long trying to dig myself out of the darkness, attempting to claw my way out of horror, and I had missed my chance at something more. My fault, I repeated to myself—all my fault.

“Kincaid?” the woman in front of me asked, her voice soft. “It’s good to finally meet you,” she said, although her voice was devoid of emotion. I didn’t know if she was lying or not.

I rolled my shoulders back. “I’m sorry for disturbing you so late. I just got into town. I’ll let you be. Sorry about this.” I turned to walk away, to let the pain ease ever so slightly even though I knew it never would, but a small hand grabbed my arm—the strength of the grip surprising me. I looked down at that diamond ring that had been put on her finger by the man I once loved. The man I still loved? I wasn’t sure.

“Come inside. Please.”

“I don’t think that would be a good idea,” I said.

Ronin didn’t say anything. And, somehow, that hurt worse than him yelling at me and throwing me out. But I would deserve it if he did. I deserved all of it.

“I’m Julia. Please, come inside. It’s late and getting a bit chilly. You don’t even have a coat on.”

“I’m fine,” I said.

“Please. You don’t want me to get mean.” Her eyes twinkled as I peered at her face.

This was the woman Ronin had married, and I liked her. She was firm, smiled, and looked like she would take no shit—the perfect partner for Ronin. She was so different from Alexis. I could already tell that, and maybe that was a good thing. She likely wouldn’t run away when things got tough.

Though I had no idea how I could tell that from a single touch, a momentary glance.

“Come on. Ronin and I were just cleaning up after dinner.”

That’s when I finally noticed the swollen lips—the tousled hair.

Oh, they had definitely been doing something after dinner, but it wasn’t cleaning up.

Jealousy slashed at me, but I pushed it away.

I deserved this, and so much more.

Finally, I looked at Ronin again, saw the longing mixed with anger in his gaze, and knew I couldn’t just leave. I would after, but I couldn’t hurt this woman, not when I knew if I walked away, I would only leave ashes in my wake for her to deal with. And neither of them deserved that.

“Okay, just for a moment.”

This is a side novella in the Montgomery Ink series. It can be read as a stand alone but we do see several of the Montgomery clan and you may enjoy the story more if you have read some of the other books.

This is the story of Ronin and Julia. Madly in love but wondering if there might be something more out there to complete there love story.  Enter Kincaid.  Bad timing. Bad blood with him and Ronin. Bad with relationships.  But Julia becomes the glue.  Both men would do anything for her.

Short story but packed with heat and sweet romance.  Loved the support they got from friends and co-workers. Great addition to the series.

When a bookworm on borrowed time meets a younger, free-spirited chicken farmer, sparks and feathers fly…
Harrison Phillip Fletcher, III isn’t supposed to be here. Not in Burlington, Vermont, not running Vino & Veritas, a quaint inclusive bookstore and wine bar, and definitely not still alive, at forty-two. Also not supposed to be here? An unexpected delivery of chickens.

Finn Barnes knows chickens. The burly organic farmer knows all about rare breed poultry, but dealing with a hot, older bookseller is an entirely different matter. City slicker types like Harrison never end up staying in Vermont for the long-term.

They should steer clear of each other. But the flare of attraction is mutual. And somehow amid book discussions and farm tours, they discover plenty in common. Now they’re stealing kisses in Finn’s barn, sneaking out like teens, and burning up the sheets.

What starts as a fling brings very real feelings for two lonely souls, but a future together seems as unlikely as chickens in a bookstore. Feathers may be flying, but learning to trust takes time neither may have. Can they take a leap of faith together before it’s too late?

Featherbed is a stand-alone novel in Sarina Bowen’s World of True North. This opposites-attract, age-gap romance features a low-angst, fluffy—and feathery—romp as a fish out of water discovers the home he never thought he’d find.

From award-winning author Garrett Leigh comes a gorgeous new romance in the True North world! Think: great food, burly men and good times. Beards are optional but encouraged.

I’m not the obvious choice to run Burlington’s coolest wine bar—quiet, brooding, clueless about tannin content, and always one wrong turn away from another downward spiral.

But no one seems to mind that I'm a wreck. Besides me. I just focus on getting through each shift until the night a beautiful stranger appears, looking as lost and damaged as I feel.

When a mutual friend calls in a favor, the sexy newcomer winds up crashing on my couch. I don't know if it's his melodic Cornish accent, or his ocean blue eyes, or the rock-hard body with the mysterious scars, but I get the feeling whatever happened to him runs far deeper than those wounds.

Having Jax in my home makes my chest warm. Makes me shiver. Makes me want more. But I've got a pile of baggage and I don't want to be a burden on anyone let alone a man who seems to have enough demons of his own.

Our chemistry is off the charts. His arms feel like home. The last thing I want is to screw this up. Is it wrong to hope we can heal each other? Or will one of us die trying?

HEARTSCAPE is a heartfelt MM friends-to-lovers romance in the True North world, with a brooding bartender, a rugged outdoorsman, sweet angst and lots of Shipley cider. Triggers: contains mentions of depression, suicidal ideation and PTSD recovery.

EXCERPT

I lean back on my elbows and stare up at the sky. The stars twinkle and blink, and the endless abyss is a blanket of black, with slight hues of dark blue. The open space that allows me to see the countless constellations has me a little more mesmerized than I ought to be. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to see something that hasn’t been blocked by bars on the outside of a window.
I’ll never take anything beautiful for granted.
“It’s such a gorgeous night!” a sweet, harmonic voice says from out of nowhere.
I sit up and glance around, staring back and forth to see if I can spot who the voice belongs to. I don’t see a damn thing. “Shit, maybe Reaper is right. I don’t need to be drinking right now.” I set the beer down and rub my eyes, fucking exhausted. It’s hard to sleep when my mind is always on, constantly with the thoughts, and battling the urge to not fucking lose it.
A giggle from my left wakes me up. I stand and run down the steps, wondering where the hell it is coming from.
“So much space!” The angelic tone is a song filtering through the exhaustion.
She’s getting closer now. It’s cold out here, and dark. What if she’s lost? She’ll need help. I spin around again, staring over the outline of the cactuses, but then the scuff and grind of sand sounds from behind me. I turn, holding my breath when the faint glow of the porch light illuminates against platinum blonde hair. Her arms are above her head, and she’s smiling as if she isn’t in forty-degree weather wearing a black dress that blends in with the night. Her skin is the color of cream, the kind someone puts in their coffee.
I’m enamored.
I stand there, staring at the most beautiful creature I’ve ever seen, watching her spin and dip like she’s a ballerina. Her movements are smooth and effortless, like waves in the sea, flowing in constant sets of perfection. One arm reaches out, like she’s stretching to touch an object that has her attention, and damn it, I wish it was me. Her back leg lifts and her dress dips low in the back and the material in the front falls over the leg on the ground.
My thoughts start to race, imagining her in my arms in bed, kissing her plump lips that are red from the cold air of the night, grabbing her tits that bounce with every graceful move she makes, and wanting her to be mine.
Only mine.
It’s dangerous when a man like me wants so deeply because I don’t have the ability to let go.
And I know if she were to ever be mine, I wouldn’t allow her to let go.
I’d take her will.
I’d take her freedom.
I’d take.
Until all there was in her world was me. All she could ever want is me.

Ok. Not sure where I land with this one.  Huge fan of the author and the Ruthless MC series. This book is a side story?/ spin off?  We have met these characters before as part of the series. I think this story and if the rest of the group follows-- is going to be pretty niche for most folks.

Zain is the long lost uncle to the MC Pres Reaper.  I would recommend reading that series first before jumping in to this book. It helps explain a lot of the missing information. That said, this book is about a group of people who escape from a mental institution. As crazy as that sounds, the book is pretty much crazy as well.

As someone who works in the mental health field, I give the author props for doing some research.  Zain's mania and Chloe's diagnosis are fairly well described. The whole energy of the book is manic and follows Zain's reactions to the people and places they are now located.  I found myself feeling anxious on his behalf.

The break for me was in the suspension of disbelief for the story. Did it seem in this time and this place, that the two characters would behave in the way they did?  I'm still undecided.  The story was interesting enough and the secondary characters had enough to say in this story to make me want to read more.  The other seemingly impossible fact was that Zain knows a LOT about mental health.  It could be that he was well educated while locked away. The impression was not given that he was in a great place, though.  I am not sure how his knowledge of mental health and what triggers and claims different diagnosis, seems plausible.

I am open to reading more.  Can't wait to see where the author takes us.

K.L. Savage decided they were tired of looking for the kind of books they wanted to read. They had an itch that needed to be scratched, and as every girl knows, nothing scratches better than an alpha.

They write about gritty, alpha males, sometimes their dark sides, and the women they love.

If you have the same itch, their alpha males should fix that.
