The Beast of Bitterburn has lost all hope.

One way or another, Njål has been a prisoner for his entire life. Monstrous evil has left him trapped and lonely, and he believes that will never change. There is only darkness in his endless exile, never light. Never warmth. Until she arrives.

It's a tale as old as time... where Beauty goes to confront the Beast and falls in love instead.

This is my first read of this author. I was drawn to the cover actually for this one. That isn't usually my go to for picking a book. I love a good fairy tale and I am always up for a unique retelling.

The story world is dark and dreary. Very gothic and peasant filled. Amarrah offers to go as tribute to the beast so that the towns people can sustain their families through the winter. She learns the truths of the mysterious Beast. She is brave and smart and has a bit of earth witch in her.

Together, they work to defeat the curse holding him to the castle. Although this has Beauty and the Beast undertones, it is a twist on the familiar story. More paranormal than the original. I liked just about everything about it.

Great rainy day read. I am looking forward to what the next int he series might be.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a savior of stray kittens, and a voice actress, not necessarily in that order. She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in Mexico with her family. She writes all kinds of genre fiction, but she has an eternal soft spot for a happily ever after.
