Julian was the boy next door. My brother’s best friend, he fit with my family in ways I never could. While he and Rhett went on to play house, I left the only life I knew, desperate for a fresh start.
Until everything changed.
Heartache came along, and the aftermath of my brother’s death was here to stay. I was now face to face with Julian more than I ever wanted to be.
Being around him brought up all my insecurities, forced me to deal with hard truths, and conjured up feelings I had no business entertaining. He wasn’t the man I thought I knew. He was complex and layered, and inherently beautiful in all the ways I’d never noticed.
Not on another person.
Not on another man.
Not until him.
I'm not sure what it says about my mood, but the last few books I have read have been just heart wrenching. I have survived and I am better for having read these wonderful stories. This is a new to me author. Wow! Such a well written story of heart break, loss, friendship and healing love.
Deacon is the older ignored brother in a family of 3 children. His younger brother dies and leaves his boyfriend completely wrecked. Deacon and his family are mostly estranged except for his sister. He tries though. A year after tragedy hit, they are all trying to move on and heal. Somehow in the process of celebrating his brother's life, Deacon becomes intrigued by the healing capacity of Julian.
In turn, Julian helps Deacon find his worth. Lots of teary moments int his story. So much to be said about the family we choose. The effects of trauma and adverse childhood situations on our mental health. And mostly, the story speaks to the power of being told you are worthy and worth being loved.
Loved this couple. So happy to see Julian fight for what he wanted despite the potential taboo. Ready to stab Deacon's mom but the HEA in the end smoothed things over for me.
Wonderful emotional read!
