I enjoy a good mafia story and this one had me intrigued. I don't think I have read this author or it has been awhile. Regardless, this one had lots of info on the Yakuza mafia. We typically see the Bratva or Italian mafia so it was interesting to learn more. Our two main characters have a history. They currently hate each other but don't really want to.
Annika has a ton of baggage but she is good at her work within the mafia world. Kenzo is an up and coming king in the Yakuza. The Mori family is coming back form extinction.
I loved Annika and Kenzo individually as characters. I loved ALL the secondary characters in the story. I was not necessarily sold on their love. They for sure had chemistry but it jumps to love real quick. The book is also sold as a dark romance with BDSM. I am not opposed to any of that. Fr me, the spicy scenes just were too over the top. They did not add to the story after the first time they get together. I get it is a dominance thing but we never really get Annika's side of how she feels about turning over that control. It is more Kenzo saying, I have to have you this way. I was much more interested in the plot and the safety of the characters than what these two did together when alone.
That said, I am intrigued enough in this world to give the next book a look. I am looking forward to getting all of Mal's secrets! Kenzo's whole family should get their own stories.
