Review: Waking Hearts

Title: Waking Hearts, Cambio Springs series
Author: Elizabeth Hunter

Genre: Paranormal

When everything you’ve longed for is standing right in front of you, would you find the courage to chase it when you’ve given up on dreams?

Fox shifter Alison Smith gave up on happy endings when her ex-husband walked out, but that didn’t mean she was allowed to give up on happiness. With four growing kids, Allie is determined to look on the bright side and carry on, even when life seems to keep kicking the girl who’s fallen down.

Four kids, two jobs, and a pile of debt left over from her ex seem overwhelming most days. Luckily, Allie has the best friends a girl could ask for. Especially a certain quiet bear who’s always been her rock.

Patient. Oliver Campbell knows what it means to be patient. But twenty years of wanting one unavailable woman may have pushed him to the edge. With Allie working every night at his bar, their friendship has begun to fracture.

Then old ghosts offer one more kick to the little family that’s already down, and patience is a virtue Ollie can no longer afford. Allie’s ex-husband may be gone, but his actions are haunting his family. With danger licking the borders of Cambio Springs, the bear and the fox will have to work together. And twenty years of unspoken truths may finally come to light.

WAKING HEARTS is the third paranormal romance novel in the Cambio Springs Mysteries series.

4.5 hearts!

My paranormal go to is wolf shifters first and then any other shifter after that. Vamps, Demons, and Fairies fall in line behind. Knowing that, I knew Elizabeth Hunter was going to write a great shifter story. What I forget, because again, I like my wofies, is how adorable bear shifters are. Oliver Campbell is all things alpha male shifter and I LOVED him!

This is the 3rd book that takes place in Cambio Springs. It follows the shifter clans who live there and the humans that they let in to their small world. You could read this book as a stand alone but you will most likely find yourself going back to read the first two books as well. The partners from the other books show up in this story and it was great to see what was happening with them.

Waking Hearts has the tattooed, growly bear, bar owner and protector, Ollie stepping up to declare his affection for Allie. Allie is a fox shifter and had her husband walk out on her and her 4 children a year previous. Her clan has been helping her and she works two jobs to make ends meet. But Ollie wants to take care of her. Allie is stubborn and head strong but so is Ollie. There was some great humor and fall in love moments in this book. Ollie loving on her kids, made Allie swoon. There is some suspense in the story along with the romance and a bit of a mystery to solve.

Overall, a nice slow build to the romance, although Allie and Ollie have been friends since they were little. Once they come together, the cogs all align and they wonder why they waited so long to declare their feelings. If you like second chance love, single parent love stories and a little PNR—this is your book! Looking forward to going back to the Springs!
