Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

3.5 Stars

Ahhh...gosh....I really wanted this to be as spectacular as book 1 was. I wanted all the feels again. The Darkest Sunrise was spectacular! It does end on a doozy of a cliff hanger, though. This book is the conclusion to the story. Things could have sorted themselves multiple ways. In a sense this one was predictable. I didn't get anything more out of it than what we already knew in the first book. It honestly could have been a couple of chapters added on to book 1 and that would have wrapped up the story for me.

I love this author and I love her work most of the time. To aviod spoilers, I won't give away many more details of the story. You'll have to read it yourself to get the outcome. I will say that the passion from the first book just didn't materialize in this one. Charlotte and Porter seemed to go through the motions. Again, all their cards were on the table in the book 1.

Now, The Brightest Sunset does have some good qualities. Travis becomes a giant of a character. Such courage and resolve in that little boy. It was worth the read just to see him find his place in the world. I loved the support from Porter's family and Charlotte's mom. That brings the other highlight: being the over arching message that love and family are what we make of it, not necessarily what we are born into. That right there, that loud and clear message of acceptance, pushed me to give more than 3 stars.

If you read book 1, you will want to finish the duet out with book 2. The series gets a solid 4 stars from me: 5++ for book 1 and 3.5 for book 2.

You won't want to miss this amazing series!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
