Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

Review

I have had the pleasure of reading all of Mia Sheridan's Signs of Love books.  She continues to move and amaze me every time she publishes.  I am so incredibly in awe of her creativity.  Every book if fresh and takes me places I am surprised to be going.  Kyland Barrett ranks up there with some of the finest book boyfriends written.  He is young but so noble, so thoughtful, and so selfless, you forget his age.  Poverty has shaped both of the lead characters into stronger people because of what they have to do to survive. Tenleigh is a strong female lead.  She knows what she must do to get herself and her family out of poverty.  She will sacrifice almost everything to get a college degree and earn good money. I loved that boy Kyland and Tenleigh were studious and loved to read.  Very sweet scenes take place in the "library".  Both lead characters are Taurus--strong and sometimes stubborn. When Tenleigh runs into Kyland again, this is his response:

He narrowed his eyes. "How dare I pull a lecherous pig off you?" he asked. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were enjoying being manhandled." . .. ...... His nostrils flared and I almost wondered if he might paw the ground like an angry bull.

Like her other books, the author takes twists and turns along the story's path that the reader doesn't always see coming.  Ultimately the story is about how deep true love runs.  What will one person do in the name of love?

"You pierce my soul.  I am , half hope.  Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever.....I have loved none but you," I whispered against her skin, quoting the words I knew she'd remember.

No spoilers for this review.  You'll have to read the story to find out what happens.  This is a stand alone.  The series consists of all stand alone books.  The commonality is the zodiac sign theme that represents one of the lead characters.  Pick them all up.  You won't be disappointed!
