True love never dies.

Megan and Cassidy were childhood sweethearts who thought they would be together forever. Fate had other plans. Soon after they were married, Cass’s life was tragically cut short. Still grieving her soul mate five years later, Megan moves to the small town of Seaside, Oregon, hoping to rebuild her life.

Her first night there, she meets the town recluse, Theo. Withdrawn, guarded, and mysteriously silent since a terrible accident left him scarred, Theo takes an instant and inexplicable dislike to Megan. But as their paths cross again and again, Megan becomes convinced there’s more to Theo than meets the eye.

When she discovers the reason for his silence, his nightmares, and especially his pointed dislike, Megan becomes convinced of something far more astonishing.

Is a second chance at a once-in-a-lifetime love possible, or is a broken heart the cruelest kind of liar?

“Hi, there, Megan, this is Coop.”

“Hi, Coop. What’s up?”

Long, awkward pause.

“Uh…I’m still standin’ outside your house.”

I walk to the windows, and there he is, out on the sidewalk near his truck.

“Are you having car problems?”

“No, I’m, uh, just waitin’ on Theo. He’s comin’ out to see you. I texted him what you said, and, uh…” Coop clears his throat. “Well, anyway, he’s on his way. I thought I’d give you a heads-up.”

The circus never stops with this guy. “That’s unfortunate, Coop, because I just got off the phone with Craig from Capstone. He’s going to handle the job.”

Coop scoffs. “Craig? That self-important S.O.B.? You like flushin’ your money down the toilet?”

“No, I don’t. Which is why I negotiated a discount.”

“Lemme guess. He probably quoted you…” He thinks for a moment, looking up at the house, then names a number which is only a few hundred dollars off from Craig’s quote, which is very irritating.

“You seem like a nice guy, Coop, but this conversation is pointless, considering your boss has no interest in working with me.”

“I never said that,” he says quickly. Our gazes meet through the window. I see how serious he is suddenly, his easy grin nowhere in sight.

“I wasn’t going to tell him you did,” I say, sensing this is somehow a matter of great importance.

When Coop blows out a breath, looking relieved, my hunch is proven right. Before I can say anything else, however, he straightens, looking down the street.

“He’s here.” He flashes me a look full of warning, then hangs up, steps out into the street, and holds up a hand.

Fascinated, I watch as a classic Mustang slowly rolls up the street, engine rumbling. It’s black, with windows tinted so dark I can’t see inside, and chrome wheels that gleam in the sun. The car stops in the middle of the street, then Coop walks over and bends down to the driver’s side window.

Several minutes pass and Coop is still standing there, talking to Theo. Or drawing pictures or whatever it is he does to communicate with Mr. Incommunicado.

“What the hell is it with this guy?” I mutter, growing more irritated by the moment.

Finally Coop straightens and the Mustang pulls up to the curb. The engine shuts off. I want to look away, but I’m rooted to the spot, staring out the front parlor window, waiting for what feels like an eternity until the driver’s door opens and Theo steps out.

Black hair.

It’s my first thought when his broad shoulders rise up over the roof of the car. I’ve only seen him in a raincoat, his head covered, but now I see he has a lot of thick, black hair, the length past the collar of his leather jacket. It’s messy. Windswept and untamed, like he only ever combs it with his fingers.

When he turns and looks toward the house, it’s like he knew exactly where I was standing. Our eyes meet with the sensation of a key fitting into a lock: a smooth, inevitable click.

A tremor runs through me, something close to fear but more primal, a pulse of restless energy that makes me want to break into a run.

I’ve never met anyone with more naked emotion in his eyes. His face is stony, but his eyes burn with a thousand unspoken things, all of which are dark.

I resist the urge to step back. We stare at each other until it becomes uncomfortable. I move first, turning to head to the front door, taking deep breaths to calm the sudden throbbing of my heart.

When I open the door, Coop and Theo are walking up the brick pathway toward the porch. Coop is in the lead, smiling nervously. “Hi, Megan!” he calls, as if he hasn’t seen me in forever.

“Hi, Coop. Long time no see.”

Coop ambles up the steps onto the porch that wraps around the front of the house, but Theo stops at the first step and looks at me, as if for permission.

“Sure, Dracula,” I say drily, unamused by this strange situation. “You’re welcome to come in. I’ll put away the garlic and crosses.”

A muscle in his jaw flexes. He doesn’t look amused, either. He steps slowly up, one big boot at a time, until he’s on the porch and I have to look up as he walks toward me with thunderclouds churning over his head. He stops a few feet away and stares down at me as Coop looks back and forth between us, visibly worried.

But I can’t pay attention to Coop anymore. Not with the boiling cauldron standing in front of me. The rumbling mountain of magma about to blow. The seething pool of silent emotions clad in a leather jacket and jeans. If I were a cop, I’d arrest this guy on the spot for disturbing the peace. All by himself, he’s a riot threatening to destroy the entire town.

On the left side of his neck, a snarl of scar tissue peeks over the collar of his shirt. His nose was broken once and not fixed well. There’s a ragged white scar above his left eyebrow that disappears into his hairline, and he walks with a barely perceptible limp, favoring his left side. And those dark, dark eyes. God, how they burn.

Whatever the accident was that he was involved in, it’s left its mark on this man, in more ways than one.

take her away from me again.

Rory

My heart stopped the second I heard about the explosion, and it didn’t beat again until I knew Matt was safe. But even as my prayers were answered, my heart hurt for him.

Chapter One

Rory
Three Years Earlier

“AURORA? HONEY, IS THAT YOU?”
I paused outside my mother’s bedroom, frozen as I fought internally with whether or not to go in. My mom had been bedridden for the last three weeks.

When I saw her the day before, she had looked even more fragile than the day before that. She was getting sicker by the day—by the damn hour—and it hurt to see her that way.

She had only been diagnosed with gastric lymphoma two months ago, but the doctors said there was nothing they could do. It had been left too long, and it had already spread. If she was lucky, she would have six months. At least, that was what they had said four weeks ago. But that was before Sabrina Michaels hadn’t been able to get out of bed. It was before she had started vomiting blood at the end of every day. It was before she had given up.

Now, hospice came in once a day, to make sure she was comfortable, and to make sure the new live-in nurse my father had hired knew what to do in case something happened.

Because it could happen any day now. There was no way to determine just how long my mother had, and it was breaking my heart.

Slowly, I opened the door to the bedroom that had been my mother’s sanctuary for years, her own little slice of heaven that only a few people in the universe were allowed to share with her. I was one of the lucky few, but that privilege didn’t extend to my father. They had kept separate rooms since before I was a teenager.

My gaze went straight to the hospital bed that was only one of many new additions to the décor of the room. There was a heart monitor on a rolling cart beside the bed, along with an IV stand, pushing fluids and blood into Mom. She had a feeding tube in now because eating just wasn’t possible these days.

Timidly, I approached the bed, and my mother gave me a weak smile as she lifted a thin hand.

“How was your date last night, my love?”

My own smile was shaky, but I forced it to stay in place as I sat on the edge of the hospital bed that practically swallowed up the tiny woman. “Matt took me out to this old field, and we watched stars for a few hours.”

It wasn’t a complete lie. We had gone to an old field, and he had spread out a thick blanket. He’d held me close while shooting stars had fallen across the sky, but my eyes hadn’t been on them. They had been wet and swollen as I had
cried out my grief for my mother against his chest.

He hadn’t said a word the entire time. Just rubbed his fingers up and down my back and let me cry it all out because he knew how much my mom meant to me. He knew how much I was going to lose when she took her last breath. Sabrina wasn’t just my mom. She was my best friend, and when she passed away, it would be just my father and me.

A man who would try to control every aspect of my life. But Mom had stood in his way for years now, ensuring that I had my own life, that I could be free from him and his manipulations. Once she was gone, though, that would change.

We all knew that.

“He sounds like a good boy,” my mother murmured now, but I heard the underlying question.

“He is a good boy,” I assured her with a slightly stronger smile this time. But this time, I was telling her a full-blown lie.
Matt Reid wasn’t a boy; he was a man. His twenty-one to my seventeen could cause some serious trouble if we weren’t careful. And being a part of the Angel’s Halo MC probably didn’t make him a “good boy,” not when both my father and
Creswell Springs’ DA were constantly trying to arrest someone from the motorcycle club. I wasn’t stupid; I knew Matt probably did illegal things when he was off on “runs” that took him away from me for days at a time.

The truth was, I didn’t care what he was doing for the MC when he left. All I cared about was that he stayed loyal to me, that he only ever loved me, and that it was my mouth he kissed like he couldn’t get enough of my taste when he got home. That was all that mattered to me. I could live with the rest.

“We haven’t had sex yet,” I assured her when she continued to just look up at me with that question in her eyes. “We want to wait until the time is right.”

Which could have been any day in the three months since I had met him. Lord knew I would have willingly handed over my virginity to him the first time I had seen him at Hannigans’ the night I’d gone in on a dare. But like everyone else in Creswell Springs, he had known exactly who I was. Which meant he knew just how old I was, and while some of the brothers in his club were into jailbait, he wasn’t one of them.

But he was just as addicted to me as I was to him, and instead of telling me to fuck off, he had asked to see me again. He called me every day, texted me all the time, and we saw each other as much as possible without my father finding out. Because if Derrick Michaels ever figured out that his only child was dating one of the MC members, he would lose his mind—and then arrest Matt.

“Tell me what else you’ve been up to,” Mom urged as she shifted uncomfortably, repositioning herself until she could find a small semblance of relief.

I reached for the IV stand and picked up the little button that would automatically dispense the powerful narcotics that would ease her pain.

“No, darling. Don’t do that just yet. I lose track of time when I use those damned meds. They confuse me, and I want to focus on you right now.”

Hating that she was in pain, but wanting to give her what she asked for, I replaced the button and sat back, filling her in on everything that had happened since I had seen her the evening before. There wasn’t much to tell her, so I told her more about my date with Matt.

“He keeps talking about the future, as if he wants me to be a part of his life forever.”

Mom’s green eyes, which had once been the same shade as mine, were now dimmed with the yellowing of the whites from jaundice and the pain she was in constantly. But they brightened just a little when I told her about Matt. “He really does sound like a good boy, Aurora.”

“I love him, Mom,” I confessed. It was the first time I had said it out loud to anyone other than Matt, but it felt good to tell her.

“It makes me feel better that you will have someone who will be here for you when I’m gone,” she murmured weakly, leaning her head back and closing her eyes.

Tears instantly pricked my eyes, but I held them back like a levee holding back the sea. “Don’t talk like that, Mom. We still have plenty of time together.”

We both knew I was only lying to myself, and when she opened her pain-filled eyes, the look in them told me that. “It won’t be long now, my baby. I can feel myself fading a little more every hour.”

“Mom, no,” I whispered brokenly.

“Yes, sweetheart. But I want you to know that I love you. You were the best thing to ever happen to me. You are my greatest joy and my greatest sorrow.”

Two fat tears fell from her eyes, but she didn’t seem to have the strength to lift her hands and wipe them away.

Reaching for a tissue, I mopped away the tears and tightened the hold on my own. “I love you too, Mom. You are my best friend. You’re my favorite person in the world, and I don’t want to lose you.”

“You won’t,” she whispered. “I will always be here for you. I will always take care of you and watch over you.” Her icy fingers wrapped around my wrist and tightened so hard I knew she was using the last of her energy to do it. “When you turn twenty-one, you won’t ever have to worry about anything. I’ve made sure of that. Just try to put up with your father until then, Aurora. After your twenty-first birthday, you can walk away from him and never look back, I promise.”

“I don’t want anything but you!” I whispered as the first tear broke the barrier and spilled free. “I would give up everything if I could keep you, Mommy.”

Weak hands pulled my head down onto her chest, and my tears flooded over my lashes, soaking into her silky nightgown. “Shh, my baby. It will be okay. I promise. You’ll be just fine.”

Blog Tour & Review: THRIVE

Thrive by Aly Martinez (Guardian Protection, #2)

Technically, you aren’t supposed to fall in love with your best friend’s girl.

But if we’re talking technicalities, he wasn’t supposed to be cheating on her every other weekend, either.

The day I met Mira York, I knew she was off-limits. But after months of stealing side-glances while he ruined the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen, I realized there wasn’t a rule in the world I wouldn’t break to make her mine.

She chose him anyway.

I wasn’t sure how I’d ever move on, but bitterness turned into fuel for my fire.

Without Mira, I thrived.

Until seventeen years later, when she showed back up, begging for protection from the very same man she’d left me for all those years earlier.

Now, it was my turn to choose.

And she wasn’t going to like my answer.

THRIVE takes place seventeen years AFTER a love triangle.

So happy to back in the world of the Guardian Protection agency.  I loved the first book and this one came with all the promise of being just as good.  Although I am not a fan of love triangles--at all---this one is historic and thus somewhat more tolerable.  We get some detailed flash backs so you are well aware of what happened.  What went south.  Who got the girl.

Jump ahead now and the girl needs protection.  Lark doesn't want to step in.  He doesn't want to open old wounds.  But his heart doesn't get the message.  His brain is telling him it is all kinds of wrong to trust this woman. Deep in both Mira and Lark's hearts lies their soul mate.  A chance to right a wrong.  If ever there was an epic tale of second chance love, this is it.

Very strong and sassy heroine in Mira.  Even as her world as she thought it existed is collapsing around her, she is determined to succeed.  Lots of action in this one. Add a bit of suspense, some smoking hot tension between the lead characters, adorable little ones and a strong team of alpha males....whew!  Great read.  Loved the epilogue to pieces!  More......I need more!!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
