During all the time I spend with Nix, I’ve been letting myself believe that lies of omission aren’t really lies. And the lies I do tell her—my name and where I’m from—don’t really matter compared to the deeper truths I lay bare. She knows my genuine feelings, my fears, my likes, and dislikes . . . things that seem so much more essential than my fake history.

Perversely, I liked watching her talk to my mom. I saw my mother look Nix over with the slightly raised eyebrow that indicated she had encountered an object of interest. It would have killed me to see my mom dismiss Nix as boring.

This is the final book in the Kingmakers series (well we can always hope for more, right?). I can't tell you much about it without giving things away. you will need to read the series in order and just jump into this one blind.

I was sure I knew who the Spy was based on the clues at the end of The Bully. And I was correct. But Holy Cow! I was almost half way in before everything clicked and I was blown away! Did not see that connection at all.

This book is a stunning conclusion to our time at Kingmakers. The author did a great job tying up all the loose ends. We get to see the whole scooby gang back together and working together on this epic journey to right the wrongs of the past.

I would be remiss if I didn't hope for more of the next gen stories to come from this author. Sabrina's for sure but there are some other littles still out there who might have grown up stories of their own. PLEASE???

The Bully recommended you read Snow first. I would also recommend that. Maybe read more of that series as well. It will help with the world building in this one. You could read it without but as I said, all the gears clicked into place with one big AH HA moment.

Reaching up, he clasped her hand and pressed her palm to his lips. He closed his eyes as he kissed it, then just held it there. “I don’t want that to be who I am,” he murmured despondently.

“That isn’t who you are.”

Opening his eyes, he lowered their clasped hands to his thigh. “It’s just going to get worse, Emma. You know it is.”

Leaning in close, she held his gaze. “If it does, we’ll face it together.”

He shook his head. “This isn’t the life I want for you. Always waiting for the next outburst, the next psychotic break. Watching me lose every bit of myself that you fell in love with.”

“That isn’t going to happen.”

“Emma,” he said, his expression tortured, “you have to face the reality of my future. I’ve been with the network for almost four years. They were studying the virus and seeking a cure long before they found me. And they’ve made no progress since then beyond finding a sedative that can knock me out. The chances of us having a happy ending together are infinitesimally small.”

She swallowed hard, everything within her rebelling against his forecast. “I’ll take those chances if it means I’ll have more time with you.” When he would’ve spoken—another protest no doubt—she again touched his lips. “If it were me, would you walk away?”

He recoiled slightly as though appalled by the mere thought of it. “What?”

“You heard me. If I was the one infected with the vampiric virus and I was the one in the surveillance video we just watched, would you walk away?”

He stared at her helplessly. “No.”

“Why?”

He exhaled a sigh of defeat. “Because I would want every moment I could have with you.”

“Then what would you do instead?”

“Fight like hell to keep you sane.”

“Exactly.” Moving over, she settled herself sideways on his lap and pulled his arms around her. “You’re strong, Cliff.” She held out an arm, flexed her biceps in an exaggerated show of muscle, and arched a brow. “I’m strong, too.”

His expression lightened. “Yes, you are.”

“Together, we can do anything. We can fight this. We can beat this. Even though you may think it’s futile, we have to give Melanie and the other doctors more time.” She pressed a tender kiss to his lips. “I know it’s hard, honey, and that things may get worse. But I’ll be here to help you through it. All of it.” She kissed him again. “I’m not going anywhere.”

Those eyes of his brightened further as he dipped his head and claimed her lips in a longer, deeper kiss.


4.5 Hearts

WOW!  Thank you so much for bringing us Cliff's story. He has been in the background during so much of the series.  I was great to get his POV and really live his life over the years. 

Some of th ebook takes place historically but we see events from Cliff's eyes.  As we move forward to the present, we really see his struggle with the virus and with the fact that he is a good guy and wants to do the right thing for all his friends but especially for Emma. 

I loved Emma for him. She is strong and loving and so supportive especially given the world that they live in. They take the slow road by getting to know each ot her and becoming friends first before moving on. All their decisions are not taken lightly. I appreciate the author being clear about the gravity of the situation. Nothing is glossed over. Yet love wins the day! 

Great addition to the a series. Great to see Seth and Bastian and Adrian again.  Great read!

It pains me to see her glance around this old house, staring at it as if she’s never really seen it before. The truth has been revealed about her stepfather, who her real dad is, and what happened to her mom. I can tell by the look on her face she feels like she’s lived a lie.
I’d never lie to her.
Gun to my head, knife to my throat, Reaper’s hand around my heart, I’d rather die than lie to my Comet.
She looks sadly around the house that held so many lies and so much deception. I thought the truth would wiggle her mind free and she’d come back to me, but we are right where we have been for a while now. If the truth doesn’t set her free, I don’t know what will.
Maybe it’s time for me to face the truth. Maybe Daphne won’t ever get her memory back and while it hurts, I’ll adapt.
Because that’s what love does.
I hurt for her, though. All those memories we built are just gone. The strength she’s had to use to get to where she is today has disappeared. It’s unfair for her not to get it back. She deserves to know and remember everything she has accomplished in life.
“I can’t believe I lived here with a monster,” she says, interrupting the stillness of the house.
It’s the first time we have been back since the day at the hospital. The day I almost lost her because of her stepfather’s selfish behavior. Many people died that day, but she didn’t.
Her aunt didn’t.
And the moment she was able to leave the hospital, I didn’t bring her here because this place isn’t her home.
I am.
So I took her to the NOLA Clubhouse where I knew she’d be safe. I’m glad I made that choice because she didn’t want to come back here until she was ready. Her Aunt Tina calls every day to check in on her, but Daphne has yet to talk to her.
Daphne is angry at Tina for keeping the truth about Mercy from her for so long. She hasn’t spoken to Mercy either. She wants to. I can tell. I don’t think my Comet knows how to open herself up to Mercy or her aunt after knowing the truth. For some reason, she can’t remember her own truth, so why would she want to talk about the truth with others?
Daphne confides in me, but there are times where she keeps me at arm’s length. We are nowhere near the couple we used to be before all this… fucking shit happened.
I’d follow Daphne to the ends of the earth, but that doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to be angry and tired.
I miss her. I miss us so much. I miss her touch. I miss sleeping next to her. I don’t know what else to do. Not even Happy makes her… happy.
Speaking of the best boy in the world, I squat and dig into my pocket for a treat and toss it to him. His jaws snap and his tail flicks. My big boy can only wear a harness now. He grew out of his collar. “Aren’t you so good?” I scratch under his chin, and he opens his jaws slightly, smiling when I hit his favorite spot. Bullseye and Reaper did me a big favor when they made a quick trip to bring me Happy a few months back.
There’s a piece of chicken hanging in his tooth, and I reach in and pluck it, placing it on his tongue. I’m never scared of him biting me. He is gentle with a select few people. Me, Daphne, and Slingshot… sometimes. Poor taco-loving bastard has a few scars on his arm from getting nicked one too many times. At the end of the day, he is still a predator, but a loving one at that.
Kind of like me, I guess.
Happy is wearing his emotional support vest, which never fails to get a few stares as I walk him every day.
Daphne is sitting on the floor in one of my oversized t-shirts, sniffling as she cries and wipes her cheek. She holds out her arms and Happy scurries across the floor and climbs into her lap, placing his head right on her shoulder. She sobs as she slides her hand down his spine, petting him gently. He purrs from her touch, which I can relate to.
Been there, Happy. I understand.

4 Hearts! 

I love a good single parent romance and this one was just perfect. Jett and Emory don't seem like they would be a good match but eventually, we all need to just take a chance.

Emory has been hurt in the recent past by her ex. Jett just doesn't ever see himself and the white picket fence type guy. Once he finds out she has a daughter, he all but swears off his attention on her. But something draws him back. They both just click. Jett is so thoughtful and kind to Emory and her whole little family. His teammates give him a hard time but in his heart, I think he knows that Emory is worth the effort.

The whole book was just a sweet summer read. Very little drama. Friends falling in love. A bit of hockey being played. Just overall a good romance. Grab this one today!
